Abundance: Resourcing NYC's Solidarity Economy

A fundraising campaign for Cooperative Economics Alliance of NYC

In the face of historic economic divides and rising rents, we recognize that now is the time to assert community control over our economy.

“When you give to bail funds, make equal donations to the solidarity economy, cooperatives, and other innovative, creative solutions so that we are not only getting our people out [of jail], but we are setting ourselves free.” – Elandria Williams (1979–2020), People’s Hub and Beautiful Solutions.

In the face of historic economic divides and rising rents, we recognize that now is the time to assert community control over our economy. From housing coops to worker cooperatives, New Yorkers are rising up with bold, creative solutions that fight for community control. We call on our wider networks to match the bold leadership of our members, so we can collectively build the solidarity economy we need to survive and thrive into the future.

In places across the world where cooperative economies are strong, networks play a critical role in sustaining the cooperative ecosystem & movement. As NYC-based solidarity economy networks focused on centering frontline cooperative sectors, NYC NoWC and CEANYC stand on the legacy of local and international Black & Indigenous economic traditions. These traditions not only teach us how we survive together. But also that cooperation offers opportunities to repair and release abundance

With over 10 years of collaboration building political and economic power, NYC Network of Worker Coops and CEANYC are joining forces in fundraising as well. Because we believe in abundance over scarcity. Because we believe we are only as strong as each other.

Over the past year, CEANYC and NYC NOWC have co-hosted a series of events - funding a cohort of leaders from

  • Affordable Housing Coops
  • Community Gardens
  • Community Supported Agriculture initiatives (CSAs)
  • Community Land Trusts
  • Financial Coops
  • Food Coops
  • Worker Coops

to build community and envision pathways to strengthen cooperative, just and equitable supply chains. This fundraising drive will allow us to build on the achievements of that collaboration. We are moving money and growing solidarity finance --- to build NYC’s interconnected/mutually interdependent solidarity economy.

Join us and make a meaningful impact toward our collective $120,000 fundraising goal. We all have a role to play in liberating cooperative futures.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONS

NYC Network of Worker Cooperatives (NYC NoWC) is a grassroots membership-based organization that is dedicated to building worker cooperative futures in NYC. As the trade association representing over 5,000 worker-owners--majority of whom are Black, Immigrant, and Women of Color-- NYC NoWC builds worker cooperative power through coop-driven advocacy, educational trainings, and resources for and by worker-owners. We are committed to a liberatory future guided by frontline workers and cooperation, and we stand guided by a movement of worker-owners building the solidarity economy we need now more than ever.

Cooperative Economics Alliance of New York City (CEANYC) strengthens and expands community-led, democratically-controlled initiatives — from worker, financial and consumer co-ops to community land trusts and gardens, mutual housing, and low-income housing co-ops. Our goal is to build an economy based on values of social and racial justice, ecological sustainability, cooperation, mutualism, and democracy.
