Help us raise $200,000 for a
new Steinway concert grand piano!
"We are so lucky to have one of the world's best orchestras and regularly have the world's leading pianists performing on our stage. For those reasons, we believe Pittsburgh deserves to have the best instrument for these artists to play so you can hear the best music coming from the stage of Heinz Hall."
-Manfred Honeck

Why do we need a new piano?
- A new concert grand is filled with projection, color and expression. Pianists want as much horsepower, control and color as they can get.
- Newer instruments are typically requested in artist riders. Ten years is the average lifespan for a solo instrument. 90% of major orchestra concert pianos are under 15 years old. Ours was built in 2001.
- Pianos are largely organic. The 12,000+ parts are born of forest, iron and sheep. Unfortunately, felt compresses and steel oxidizes and wood ages. Over time a piano loses projection and expression. It can no longer shout over a Rachmaninoff orchestra or sustain a lyrical whisper.
