The Jackson Opera Guild was organized in 1945, spearheaded by the efforts of Mignonne (Mrs. John T.) Caldwell with the enthusiastic support of a rapidly growing group of vocal and instrumental performers and supporters. At the time of its organization, the Jackson Opera Guild was one of twelve organizations of its kind in the United States.
The first performance

Rusticana, sung in Italian.
The Mission of Mississippi Opera: To enhance Mississippi's cultural and economic development by presenting high quality opera performances in an accessible manner; to identify and develop regional operatic artists; and to promote the understanding and appreciation of Opera through education, outreach, and audience development.
