About the Organization

The Society of Surgical Oncology Foundation

When a patient receives a cancer diagnosis, the first step is often to meet with a cancer surgeon. Surgical oncologists and general surgeons performing cancer surgeries have a tremendous impact on survival, quality of life, and outcomes. The commitment required to learn new techniques and perfect existing ones, stay abreast of new cancer treatments, and work closely with patients and their families for the best outcomes is extraordinary. Cancer surgeons require ongoing education and training, and the discipline requires ongoing research to move the science forward.

The James Ewing Foundation, now doing business as The SSO Foundation, was established in 1978 to perpetuate the memory of James Ewing, MD, the founder of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) and the physician who is widely regarded as "the Father of Oncology." The primary focus of the Foundation is the support of education and research in surgical oncology. The Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to advancing Dr. Ewing's legacy as a researcher and clinician.
