A fundraising campaign for Crossroads Center for Children

Crossroads Center for Children is the school where almost 100 children learn skills that will help them reach the critical steps they need to make progress.

MISSION: To prepare individuals with and without developmental disabilities for life success within their family and community.

Crossroads Center for Children is a very special non-profit school. Our children are aged 2 to 12, and many of them have autism. We help our students in so many ways. They learn to talk, and walk, and feed themselves. They learn to cope with challenges and work through difficult behaviors. They learn to look at other people, and to say “hi”.  They learn math and ELA, science and all of the other school skills too.

PHILOSOPHY: Crossroads Center for Children utilizes interventions from the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA), a branch of psychology and education with a foundation based on scientific analysis of human behavior and learning.

Crossroads is in Rotterdam, NY, but students come to us from all the region. Children come here from as many as 30 different school districts and 10 different surrounding counties. If you are within 2 hours of our location it is likely that a child from your community is or was a student here. Certainly everyone knows someone with autism; it is now diagnosed in 1 in 68 children.

Autism is a spectrum of many different individual needs, making challenges for people with communication, social,  and behavior skills. We use a special kind of teaching to break skills into sets and steps that help our students make excellent progress and gains that will help them throughout their lives. It is not what is inexpensive but it is what works for our children.

Since we are a non-profit school, we have to fundraise greatly to raise most of our money to run our school and provide the type of instruction that our children benefit from. On top of that, when there is something that we want for our students, even for the things most public schools normally have, it comes down to fundraising for us to get it. We rely greatly on people with a heart for our work and mission to help us.

Right now, we are trying to ensure that our whole school can have the Handwriting Without Tears books that we use in every classroom across the school. These are the books that each individual student learns to color, draw and write in, no matter what age or level. Handwriting Without Tears is a well-researched curriculum that suits our students well. We've been using it consistently for almost 3 years and it works well with what we are trying to accomplish.

This is part of a larger project budget, but for the next two weeks we are focusing on getting just these books. Each child needs one of each book. We are planning for the new school year 2017-18, and also for adding 2 new classrooms in the fall.

Thank you for your help with our campaign. It is deeply appreciated.

Sincerely, Vicki Ramotar, MSED, Resource Development Specialist

PS- we've made some TV shows with our non-profit friends at SACC.TV and The Muffin Man this year, that can give you more information about our school.

THANK YOU!!!!!

October 13, 2017

So many thanks to everyone who helped us raise money for Learning Without Tears on this campaign!!! Because of YOU, we raised $399.00 and were able to purchase 4 sets (10 each) of MYBOOKS, and 28 individual MY FIRST SCHOOL BOOKS. Between today and Monday, the books are being distributed and spread out amongst the school, and teachers are extremely grateful.

We're also waiting to see whether or not our project will be selected for a grant! Hopes are high for three different grantors. Since the WHOLE budget for this project is quite large, it would be amazing if all three chose us, so please cross your fingers and toes on behalf of our classrooms, OT department, and children!!

We are also saving bottle return money for this cause, That however is gaining very s l ow l y - since the end of June the envelope has increased to almost $10. But every cent helps, right?

We'll soon be gearing up for #GivingTuesday/#NYGivesDay! We'll focus on different items on our Learning Without Tears budget/plan. If you can help us again, or even just share our needs, we will be eternally grateful!

Again, thank you very much for giving LEARNING, and helping our students. You are AWESOME!
