On Friday the 8th, the ladies at GiveGab and I participated in Women’s Build 2015 with our local Habitat for Humanity. Our company has done a lot of volunteering together, but this build was one of the best volunteering experiences I’ve had! Everyone there was so positive and encouraging which quickly blew away the hesitations I had about my limited experience in building.
First time with the skill saw!
I was really surprised by the amount of skills I was able to learn in just one day, ranging from operating various power tools to understanding how to speed up production by creating templates. Our build leaders were able to give us enough direction that we were rather autonomous throughout the day. I felt that their guidance gave us more of an opportunity to bond with each other, allowing us to solve problems together. In the end, we were able to take ownership and pride in the work we were doing.

The event was extremely organized and really made the volunteers feel special by providing us with awesome meals and even potted plants as a thank-you gift!
One of the best parts about this opportunity was that I was able create a personal fundraiser to raise money for it on GiveGab and then see my donations in action while working at the event. Executive Director, Shannon MacCarrick, had this to say about using the GiveGab platform,
“GiveGab helped us run a successful fundraising campaign for our Women Build Weekend. GiveGab is super accommodating, good at what they do, and really easy to work with. For your fundraising needs, I would highly recommend the GiveGab platform.”
Overall, I thought that Women’s Build 2015 was an amazing way to give back to the community while learning a ton of new skills and gaining some confidence along the way! I am really looking forward to next year’s event and hope to bring even more girls with me!
