This is event is powered by Champions: the amazing people who have agreed to raise $5,000 each for HSSC between Thursday, June 17, and 10am on Friday, July 16. If they don't meet the challenge, they'll be "locked up" in either a dog or cat room at HSSC for about an hour, during which time they'll be smiling and dialing their contacts to get them to donate and bail them out. 

All proceeds raised will be put toward HSSC’s shelter renovation campaign. Thank you to all the Champions and supporters!

Building a More Humane Future

At some point, an animal left its mark on your life. Maybe it was your childhood pet. Maybe it was an animal that helped you through a rough patch. Maybe it’s your current fur baby. Think about how much that animal meant to you and how it changed your story. Now multiply your story by 1,800. That’s the number of cats and dogs saved by the Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) every year.

Until now…

HSSC is in the final stages of construction on the largest renovation and expansion project in our nearly 70-year history. We are still on the exact same location on 15th Street, but we knocked down our cramped, outdated facility. In its place, we are building a 38,000ft2 shelter that will truly transform the landscape of animal care in our area. We will be able to care for more than 2,700 animals each year—an annual increase of 900 animals. Our new shelter is a dream on the brink of coming true, but we need your help. You can make this dream a reality and save 2,700 animals each year for decades to come.

This is an incredible opportunity to show your love for animals and to demonstrate your support for the area’s premier no-kill shelter. Our new facility will be an incredible place, but it’s what will happen inside the building that matters.

• Every day, people will walk through our light-filled atrium, eager to meet their new family members.
• Shelter cats will enjoy the view from their multi-story indoor/ outdoor “catios,” living in the lap of luxury.
• Dogs who had only ever known pain and fear will experience the feeling of a full belly, a soft bed, and a secure space.
• Children will interact with animals in our summer camps, learning compassion and empathy in the process.
• Every animal will visit our in-house clinic, whether they need only routine care or a lifesaving procedure.
• Animal welfare professionals will congregate in our multipurpose space for symposiums and workshops, pooling their knowledge to help save more animals in our state.
