1619 Flux: Art + Activism is an art space where expression intersects with empowering dialogue toward the aim of inspiring hopeful community change in our city’s most underserved areas.fLUX’S mission is to transform spaces into useful places by leveraging the power of creativityand community.
In many west Louisville neighborhoods, there is substantial need for public spaces that support community building, remove blight, and strengthen investments into infrastructural needs. Transforming a blighted warehouse space into a premier gallery space, Flux is catalyzing neighborhood transformation through targeted programming that includes Issue-focused art exhibitions, the Fran Heuttig Public Art Series, Colin’s Voice: Artist Support Circle, monthlycommunity dialogue events, and public spacerevitalization projects.
Flux needs your help to keep these important community projects going! Please join us on #GIVINGTUESDAY at and make a contribution of any amount so we can continue to make a difference throughout the city. Please share this with your friends and family and tell them why you support flux!
FLUX currently offers the following initiatives, with more to come in the future:
(1) The Fran Huettig Public Art Project, started by 1619
FLUX, in partnership with Fund for the Arts, and Louisville Metro Public
Art. Each year this project supports an artist who works in
collaboration with the community to place art in one or multiple west
Louisville neighborhoods, making art accessible to all. The first mural
was completed on the building at 18th and Muhammad Ali where Sweet
Peaches Restaurant is located. Three (3) more pieces of public art will
be completed before the end of the yea as a part of The Fran Huettig
Public Art Project.
(2) Art exhibitions free to the public, which provide a
platform for both established and emerging artists in our community,
specifically those artists living or working in underserved areas or
from minority populations. 1619 FLUX deliberately exhibits artwork that
addresses social justice issues such as systemic racism, homelessness,
and revitalization versus gentrification.
(3) "Connecting
Conversations" + Provocative Perspectives. The “Connecting Conversations” series began in early 2016 to inspire honest dialogue around issues
vital to an inclusive community and healthy neighborhoods. Community
leaders and citizens from across the city gather to share ideas and
develop solutions to challenging issues facing Louisville’s most
disadvantaged neighborhoods. Our series has yielded a model to replicate
across the city, with its success recognized through a partnership with
Community Foundation of Louisville to extend community conversations in our newest series “Provocative Perspectives”.
(4) 1619 FLUX has started "Colin's Voice: Artist Support Circle" Because
artists at all levels need community and a wide range of support, our
Artist Support Circle encourages artists to connect for growth and to
combat isolation. In addition to providing space and other resources,
micro-grants are awarded for artists to distribute through participatory
budgeting. This program was developed in honor of the late Colin Segal,
nephew of 1619 Flux Founder Kara Nichols.
(5) The Revitalization of the Carnegie Library at 1718 West Jefferson St is a new Flux program slated to create a state-of-the-art, wrap-around co-working space for entrepreneurs and developers to build capacity, collaborate, and obtain development and operational support. This new initiative is set within an inspiring and informative library space and will provide flexible work areas, shared ideation space, classrooms, conference space, and a larger venue for community events. In addition, 1718 Flux will engage various local partners to provide administrative support, small development consulting, and business planning resources to assist aspiring entrepreneurs and developers in transforming their ideas into sustainable assets for the community.
